Language and culture are integrated together. One can not fully use the language appropriately without understanding the rich culture that supports the language. The truth about real Chinese communication is that when Chinese people speak the emphasis is on the way things are said not what is actually being said. So the bottom line is to develop a great understanding of Chinese culture so you can use effective language skills to communicate at a deeper level. Therefore your words become meaningful and powerful to others.

A simple example would be ‘how do you respond when a Chinese person gives you a compliment’? In English, you would appreciate this person by saying ‘thank you’. So if you simply learnt a Chinese word ‘xie xie’ and use it in this situation. You would make a fool of yourself. The culturally acceptable way of responding in such situation is to say ‘Na li, na li.’ Literally translation is ‘where, where’. That is really confusing if you don’t know the culture background. The Chinese culture is to be humble . By saying ‘na li, na li’, it shows you are humble and people would respect you for valuing the same thing.

It makes sense to use the same strategy to learn a new language.  Our purpose for teaching Mandarin is to empower you to develop your own ability to recognise the language structures, use the language patterns to build your own sentences together. Therefore, you will build your confidence in conversing through our careful guidance.

One of the main blockers for English speakers to learn Mandarin is like this “ I can’t remember the words! Or I forgot what I learnt previously.” If that is you, then most likely the knowledge that you learnt is not connected in a meaningful way.
