The Beginner course is designed for anyone who is new to Chinese language and culture, or for anyone who has studied Mandarin before, but has forgotten much of it, or would like to gain confidence in speaking.
With the teacher’s careful guidance, you will learn to use Chinese tones successfully, learn key words in a meaningful context. Gradually build your words into short phrases and in sentences. You will discover that you don’t need to memorize words and sentences. Conversation topics are chosen for real life speaking situations. It is true that ‘Mandarin speakers pay more attention to the way they speak, not so much about what is being said.’ In class, you will learn different ways to communicate effectively.
Develop a strong awareness of Chinese cultural etiquette which is a great advantage to good communication and building rapport with Chinese people. You will explore a range of topics like meeting someone for the first time, addressing people appropriately, Mian Zi ( ‘face value’- honour and respect. the most important culture value in Chinese society), non-verbal communication skills(when ‘yes’ means ‘no’ ) and how to respond to a compliment appropriately.
This course is followed on from The Beginner Mandarin and expands on the language structures and patterns for your ability to converse. Ideally you have completed the Beginner Course with us. You would like to form more complex sentences and expand your confidence in a wide range of topics. Such as: making appointments; ordering food from an authentic Chinese menu; shopping & bargaining; getting around easily etc. After the course, your ability to converse and express yourself in Mandarin Chinese becomes much higher.
You will also gain a much deeper awareness of cultural etiquettes such as gift giving (dos and don’ts); exploring the most important (business) relationship skills in Chinese society– ‘guan xi’. Practical tips when travelling in China and core culture differences.
In the end of the course, you will use the skills to practice in an authentic Chinese restaurant.

This is the course for anyone who has gained the basic structure of Mandarin and their language is at a semi -functional level. However you may still find it challenging to understand Chinese speakers if your Mandarin doesn’t quite flow appropriately. This course is designed for you to build up your vocabulary for a wider range of topics.
You will discover, there are no set dialogues to remember. Conversation topics are based on real life situations. You will also have the chance to learn conversation scenarios that are relevant to your purpose. i.e business dealings, travelling language, family purpose etc.
This is also the best time to master the key principals of writing Chinese characters. You will learn the simple and meaningful way to write and recognise Chinese characters which will aid you to read and write in the future and are also helpful to recognise certain characters when you are in China.

This is the course to integrate all aspects of Chinese learning together. You can flow a conversation very well and would like to improve your reading and writing skills as well as learning to use sophisticated language to communicate better. This is the course for you to take your language skills to the next level.
Your teacher will speak mainly in Chinese but shifting back to English for the occasional difficult vocabulary or phrases. This is a great environment to learn new things and practice to use Mandarin in all angles at the same time.
